Queen Sheba’s visit with Solomon (1 Kings 10) has often been “hollywoodized” making this biblical story out to be more than what is found in the text. Sorry, I don’t see any love interests or sex scandals mentioned in this story.
The purpose of the queen’s visit was primarily to observe Solomon’s great wealth and reputation.
Several observations are in order but may I mention one for now. It is a theological theme which is often overlooked. Despite the grandeur and splendor of Solomon’s riches, the queen’s visit centered on listening to Solomon’s great wisdom.
The text says, “…because the Lord has loved Israel; forever, therefore He made you King, to do justice and righteousness” (10:9).
When the queen of Sheba cast her eyes on all of Solomon’s wealth she saw God’s wisdom of righteousness and justice displayed before her very eyes. She thought Solomon’s achievements demonstrated God’s love for Israel. His love is great she thought. God drew her to Himself in this way. How like God to arrange this meeting.
Jesus, our king, has lavished his love on us today. He rules with justice and righteousness. His love is great. Similarly, God has arranged his love to be witnessed through the death and resurrection of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. How like God, to arrange a meeting between himself and the reader. How great is that love.
How Great is That Love
